WOKINGHAM Borough Council has pledged to look at continuing its free parking scheme for borough car parks as a result of the regeneration delays.
The Executive voted to introduce a Free After Three scheme, allowing residents to use council-owned car parks without charge from 3pm to 8am.
The current temporary measures are due to end on Wednesday, January 31, with charges reintroduced from Thursday, February 1.
However, as a result of Market Place works overrunning, the council is looking at an extension.
Cllr Keith Baker, executive member for highways and transport, said: “Free after three is due to come to an end this month. However, as Broad Street will not reopen until March, we are now actively looking to extend the scheme.”
And Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Lindsay Ferris said that extending the scheme is a must.
“No question about it,” he said. “It has to be extended until the works are finished.
“It’s not going to be a complicated thing, they should do it. They longer the works carry on, the greater the issues for businesses.
“If the businesses aren’t thriving, what’s the point of all this regeneration work. Who will benefit from it?”
