Michael Olise has emerged as one of the leading contenders for this year’s Ballon d’Or, capping a rapid rise that has drawn attention back to his early development at Reading FC.
The 24-year-old, who began his senior career in Berkshire, has enjoyed another standout season at Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and the Champions League, with a series of high-impact performances placing him firmly in contention for football’s most prestigious individual award.
Olise made his breakthrough at Reading during the 2019/20 campaign before establishing himself as one of the Championship’s most exciting young players the following season. His return of seven goals and 12 assists in 2020/21 earned him the EFL Young Player of the Season award and attracted interest from Premier League clubs.
Since then, his development has accelerated. Known for his technical ability, close control and creativity in attacking areas, Olise has added consistency and end product to his game, key factors behind his inclusion in Ballon d’Or discussions.
Speaking previously about his time at Reading, Olise has acknowledged the role the club played in his progression, with coaches providing both the freedom to express himself and the structure required at senior level.
Reading supporters have followed his progress closely, with many viewing his rise as a reflection of the club’s academy system. Despite the club’s recent struggles on and off the pitch, Olise’s success offers a reminder of its ability to develop elite talent.
The Ballon d’Or race is expected to be closely contested, with performances in major competitions likely to influence voting. However, Olise’s growing influence at the highest level has already positioned him among the standout candidates.
One Reading fan said: “Olise has gone from gliding through defenders in the Championship for Reading to gliding through defenders away at the Bernabeu in the Champions League. What a player.”
Another added: “That sell-on fee could well have kept us alive as it came at such a vital time.
Not only is Michael Olise the crown jewel of our Academy, but he’s a Reading legend for that reason. So good that he inadvertently saved us.
For Reading, the recognition of a former academy product on the global stage represents a notable point of pride, and a connection to one of football’s most compelling individual stories this year.
