Wokingham Today has reached out to all political parties with candidates standing in the forthcoming local elections. Every party has been offered the opportunity to provide a manifesto-style column to appeal to voters, and over the next week will be publishing those received. Today, it’s the turn of the Liberal Democrats.
Wokingham Liberal Democrats have set out our vision for the future, highlighting its record in office and priorities for the years ahead.
Cllr Stephen Conway, leader of Wokingham borough council, and Cllr Prue Bray, deputy leader, said: “Our administration is focused on building inclusive communities where everyone has the chance to thrive.
“Our approach is not just about responding to challenges, but about delivering long-term improvements that benefit all our residents.”
They added that housing remains a key priority.
“We have increased the affordable housing target on major developments to 40%, with 70% of those homes for social rent.
“We have delivered new energy-efficient council homes and specialist accommodation for care leavers and young disabled residents.
“Looking ahead, we are committed to completing the regeneration of Gorse Ride by 2028 and continuing to deliver sustainable, low-carbon homes while protecting our green spaces from unplanned, speculative development.
“Safe and sustainable travel is another major focus.
!We have increased investment in road maintenance, launched the ‘Safer Streets’ programme, and improved local bus services.
“We are now committing a further £5.5 million to improve roads, pavements, cycleways and drainage, alongside introducing safer speed limits, improving access to train stations and expanding electric vehicle charging points.
“We aim to make walking, cycling and public transport more practical, reducing congestion and improving air quality.
“We have also prioritised support for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). We have opened new specialist units, secured funding for a new special free school due to open in 2028, and expanded support for young people with additional needs. Our next steps include creating a new post-16 SEND hub, improving early intervention services and continuing to expand local provision.
“Since 2022, we have delivered on our key priorities despite significant financial pressures. Whilst other councils around us have struggled, we have been externally assessed as the second most productive council in England in terms of outcomes achieved per pound spent.
“We will continue to support those most in need, work in partnership with residents, and build a thriving, greener and prosperous future for everyone in Wokingham borough.”
