New play script writers are being discovered and nurtured by an enterprising drama group.
Twyford Drama is even asking: “Could the next Alan Ayckbourn [a highly successful British playwright] be living right here in Twyford?”
The group started its own writing group last summer. The aim was to offer drama group members the chance to have a go.
Led by Kathy Reid, whose most recent play ‘Fight Them For The Beeches’ was enjoyed by large audiences in Twyford last year, the writing group has looked at different facets of script writing.
These included character, plot, script formatting and script editing, as well as reviewing high quality writing from established playwrights.
The writing group members were then encouraged to write their own play. This resulted in six quality scripts ranging from domestic comedy to biting social satire. One of the scripts was for the drama group’s next panto ‘Button’s Dream’, written by Emma Cianchi. Mike Higgins wrote two of the plays.

All six scripts were presented at a successful Writers’ Showcase at a Twyford Drama Group social event at Loddon Hall last Saturday (June 29).
The writers had cast and directed their own plays which were well received by an audience of theatre group members, family and friends.
The drama group says that all the playwrights agreed that it was a magical feeling witnessing their scripts being brought to life by Twyford Drama’s talented actors.
Kathy Reid said: “All the plays were proven to be very good in performance and didn’t the actors do well!’
