Wokingham MP Clive Jones has published an Early Day Motion in the Houses of Parliament, congratulating Wokingham borough council on the fact that 98% of its year 6 children have received a place at one of their first choices of secondary school.
He said: “It’s fantastic news that 98% of children going into secondary school in Wokingham Borough got a place at one of their preferred schools on National Offer Day.
“I’ve been visiting many local secondary schools recently, and the dedication of the teaching and support staff never fails to astound me.
“This incredible statistic represents the countless hours teachers put into giving our children the best start in life, day in, day out. Their efforts make a real difference, and they deserve recognition.
“That’s why I have written an Early Day Motion calling on colleagues to join me in celebrating the outstanding work taking place in Wokingham’s schools.”
The motion, tabled on April 22, said: “This House welcomes the news that 98% of Year 6 children in Wokingham borough received a place at one of their preferred secondary schools for September 2026 on National Offer Day, including 87.4% receiving a place at their first preference school; celebrates the high quality and deeply caring nature of schools across Wokingham borough and the UK; notes that the transition from primary to secondary school is a hugely significant step in a young person’s life; and wishes the best for all pupils across the UK beginning the next step of their education in Year 7 in England and Wales, S1 in Scotland, and Year 8 in Northern Ireland.”
An Early Day Motion is a formal, written motion submitted by members of parliament in the House of Commons to draw attention to specific causes, events, or opinions, rarely intended for actual debate.
They function primarily as a public record of views and a tool for gathering support, often covering topics such as local campaigns, anniversaries, or political issues.
It had been supported by five MPs as of April 28.
