THREE local charities are celebrating after receiving substantial donations from the annual Wokingham Winter Carnival.
Earlier this month, Wokingham Winter Carnival Committee chairman Philip Mirfin presented the cheques from profits made last November’s fun day out.
A cheque for £2,000 was presented to Sue Jackson from the Charity Wokingham in Need, a charity helping serve the local community.
A second £2,000 donation was made to Wokingham town mayor Cllr Peter Lucey. This will be shared between his two charities, Wokingham & District Association for the Elderly (WADE) and Keep Mobile.
He said: “It was an honour to be presented with a cheque for £2,000 for my Town Mayor’s charities this year, courtesy of the Wokingham Winter Carnival Committee. Monies raised will be split equally between these two worthy causes: they do so much vital work to assist the elderly in our community.
“The 2017 Wokingham Winter Carnival was again a great success, and my thanks to all those who helped and took part, especially as we were in the middle of the Market Place renewal. Not only is the Carnival a wonderful event for townspeople and visitors, it raises thousands for charities and is a wonderful start to Christmas.
“We look forward to an even better Carnival this year when the new Market Place and Peach Place will be completed.
He added: “The Wokingham Carnival Committee welcomes new members and if you would like to help, please get in touch.”
Mr Mirfin said that last year’s Winter Carnival had some unique challenges due to the refurbishment works, but people still came out to enjoy the event, which included a laser show to make up for the lack of the annual procession.
“Over the day and into the early evening residents once again supported us in their thousands and, despite experiencing additional costs, we were delighted to be able to support each of our three charities with cheques for £2,000 each,” he said.
This year’s Winter Carnival will take place on Sunday, November 25.
