A DAY of brilliant sunshine, lots of smiles and plenty of blisters: Wokingham Half Marathon took place on one of the warmest February days for decades on Sunday, February 24.
The event attracted just under 2,000 runners on the day, although the 2,400 places had sold out in advance.
Runners set off from Cantley Park just after 10am. Their route went along Twyford Road, into Bell Foundry Lane – which had been specially opened for the day – into Carters Hill, The Straight Mile, along Hungerford Lane and into Hurst, before heading back into The Straight Mile and towards Cantley.
The first man back was Matt Clowes, who clocked up an impressive time of 1:04:06.
And, with a time of 1:16:51, Hayley Munn from the Northampton Road Runners was the first woman home.
No records were broken on the day, so the bonus prize of £500 remains in the pot for another year.
Liz Yelling has held the woman’s course record since 2009 with 1.11.09, while Phil Wicks’ run of 1.03.14 for the men has stood since 2012.
There was probably one record broken today: David Cliff estate agents, one of the race’s main sponsors, had provided water bottles to hand out to finishers, but with the warm conditions, they ran out and had to resort to the back-up of handing out cups of water filled from canteens.
