Drainage improvement works are set to take place at six locations across Wokingham borough next week as part of efforts to reduce the risk of road flooding.
The work will involve temporary two-way traffic signals and is due to be carried out on the following dates:
– Church Road, Earley – Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 February
– Wokingham Road, Earley – Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 February
– Lower Wokingham Road, Crowthorne – Tuesday 3 February
– Brookers Hill, Shinfield – Tuesday 3 February
– Eversley Road, Arborfield – Thursday 5 and Friday 6 February
The council said it regularly receives enquiries about flooding on roads during the winter months, noting that much of the local road network relies on roadside ditches and watercourses being properly maintained.
Targeted work is carried out at flood-prone locations throughout the year, with CCTV surveys used to identify where repairs or maintenance are required.
However, the authority said it is not responsible for every stream, ditch or drainage channel in the borough, with many located on private land. In those cases, maintenance is the responsibility of the landowner.
Drivers are being urged to take extra care, after a motorist became stranded in flood water in Charvil last week.
The council warned that flood water can be deeper than it appears and advised motorists not to attempt to drive through it, instead finding an alternative route where possible.
