FOR THE first time in its 118-year history, a regional brass band has earned a coveted spot at the Royal Albert Hall.
The Sandhurst Silver Band will be in London competing as one of the top 20 brass bands in the country.
Its historic milestone comes after the musicians were placed second to podium regulars Zone One Brass in a field of eleven bands in the top division of the London & Southern Counties Region.
Operating much like football divisions, the nearly 500 competing brass bands in the UK are split into five ‘sections’ all vying for promotion and the rare opportunity to travel to the Albert Hall for the Championship Section National Finals on Saturday, October 3.
Reflecting on the achievement, musical director Joshua Ruck said: “We’re incredibly proud to be representing our region at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time since our band was formed in 1908.
“It’s especially rewarding as we’ve only been working together for a year, and in that time the players have made tremendous progress in their performance, commitment, and unity.
“This achievement reflects the hard work and spirit of everyone involved, and it’s a moment we’ll all cherish while also renewing our ambitions and excitement for the future.”
Preparations now begin for the Finals in October, alongside the usual packed schedule of charity concerts and fundraisers.
The ambitious and community minded championship section band is looking to build on its recent successes, and is currently advertising vacancies for cornet, horn, and fourth percussion players to complete its line-up.
Rehearsals at its band room, five minutes from junction4 of the M3, take place every Tuesday evening with additional rehearsals for contests.
