PEOPLE going to this year’s Wargrave Festival have been urged to book the final remaining tickets after a near sell-out first two weeks.
Thousands of locals and visitors have already enjoyed packed events ranging from Shakespeare to brass bands to a gin tasting night.
As the festival enters its third and final week, Graham Howe, said the last remaining tickets were disappearing fast.
“It has been absolutely amazing with almost every show selling out,” he said. “Heavy rain on the opening night meant one performance of As You Like It had to be cancelled because the stage was drenched but other than that, everything has gone to plan.
“It was amazing to watch the young cast aged 10 to 16 do four performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with every ticket sold.
“Other events such as the Safari Supper and Gin by the River could have been sold out twice. I think the large crowds mirror just how good the events have been and how supportive local people are.”
The three-week festival started on Wednesday June 12 and closes on Sunday June 30. In between, 40 varied productions staged by 20 village societies take place.
Some of the highlights have included a classical clarinet evening at St Mary’s Church and Brass on the Grass at Wargrave Court.
“The house was owned by a lovely lady, Verna Houghton who sadly died two weeks ago. Her funeral took place on Tuesday this week,” added Graham.
“We thought the scheduled brass performance would be cancelled but Verna’s four children told us it must go on as that is what their mother would have wanted.”
TV and Strictly star, Debbie McGee presented another sold out show this week featuring memories of her life with one of Britain’s best loved magicians, Paul Daniels.
The sparkles and sequins theme continues this Saturday with a special edition of Dancing Under a Spell which will be held in the marquee, The Festival, which was inspired by the Vicar, the Revd John Ratings, was first held in the summer of 1975 and now takes place every two years.
Added Graham: “For anyone wanting to come and see the many excellent shows and events still lined up, I suggest they get online immediately and book their tickets before they are all gone.”
