It’s never too late to learn

ANYONE who would love to learn something new but who wants to chat with someone first before applying (or prefers not to apply online) can meet with Wokingham Borough Council’s Adult Education team in person.

There are a number of classes to choose from in June and July, including IT skills for work, how to manage children’s anxiety, and how to make the best packed lunches.

Some courses are free *, and all are free to those on low income or job seeking benefits.

What courses are available?

Excel for Work will take place at Wokingham Library on Mondays from June 1 through to July 6, 10.15am to 12.15pm.

It’s £30 or free to those on job seeking or a low income.

IT Skills for Work is also at Wokingham Library on Mondays from June 1 through to July 6, but from 1pm until 3pm.

Empower You (how to be a positive and confident communicator) will run from St Paul’s Parish Rooms, on Wednesdays from June 3 through to June 24, and July 8, from 12.30pm until 2.30pm.

The course costs £30 or free to those on job seeking or a low income.

Create and Deliver Presentations using Powerpoint is held online via Zoom over two Wednesdays, June 3 and 10, from 10am until noon.

It’s £15 or free to those on job seeking or a low income.

*Digital Skills for Beginners will take place at Wokingham Library o Wednesdays from June 3 through to June 24, from 12.30pm until 2.30pm.

This course is free.

Building Resilience in Primary Aged Children is a Zoom course.

It takes place online over two Tuesdays, June 9 and 16, from 7.30pm until 9pm.

It’s £15 or free to those on job seeking or a low income.

*A free in-person version of this course will take place at the Parents Hut, Loddon Primary School on Tuesday, June 9, from 10am until 11.30am.

Priority will be given to parents whose children attend the following primary schools: Loddon, Aldryngton, Earley St Peter’s, Hawkedon, Hillside, Radstock, and Whiteknights.

*Job Searching using AI (User friendly strategies) can be joined, free of charge, at St Paul’s Parish Rooms, on Friday, June 12, from 10am until noon.

*Building your Confidence to get into Work or Volunteering is also free, held online on Zoom, on Wednesdays, from June 17 through to July 8, from 10am until noon.

Introduction to being a Teaching Assistant in Schools takes place at the Oakwood Centre, Woodley, on Thursdays, from June 25 through to July 16, from 9.30am until 12.30pm.

It costs £40 or free to those on job seeking or a low income.

Resilience and Anxiety in Teenagers is an online course held on Zoom, over two Wednesdays, on July 1 and 8, from 7.30pm until 9pm.

It’s £15 or free to those on job seeking or a low income.

*Managing Child Anxiety in Primary aged Children is a free course held at the Parent Hut, Loddon Primary School, on Tuesday, June 30, from 9am until 10.30am.

Priority will be given to parents whose children attend the following primary schools: Loddon, Aldryngton, Earley St Peter’s, Hawkedon, Hillside, Radstock, and Whiteknights.

Digital Safety on your iPads and iPhones takes place at Wokingham Library, on Fridays, from July 3 through to July 17, from 10am until noon.

It costs £23 or free to those on job seeking or a low income.

*Creative Lunchboxes for Happy Kids is a free course.

It takes place at the Parent Hut, Loddon Primary School, on Tuesday, July 7, from 9am until 10.30am.

Priority will be given to parents whose children attend the following primary schools: Loddon, Aldryngton, Earley St Peter’s, Hawkedon, Hillside, Radstock, and Whiteknights.

English for Speakers of Other Languages

A range of English for Speakers of Other Languages courses are available; from Pre Entry to Advanced – online and in community settings.

Learners are offered courses to meet their needs, and there is a short waiting list for some courses.

After applying, learners complete an online assessment to test their English levels to ensure appropriate classes are offered.

*Maths and Adult Literacy free courses

Bespoke Maths sessions are available to those without a GCSE or Level 2 equivalent.

Adult Literacy sessions are available to those with English as their first language without a GCSE or a Level 2 equivalent.

Courses are arranged to suit learners needs.

A quick online assessment ensures sessions suit the learner.

All are free of charge.

All the above courses for adults 19 years and older on August 31, are prioritised for those who live or work in Wokingham Borough, or who have a child at a Wokingham school.

They are either free or at a low cost, with concessions for eligible learners.

School Green Centre, on Friday, May 29, from 10am until 1pm

Dinton Pastures (just before the park) on Friday, June 12, from 1pm until 4pm, and again on Friday, July 10, from 10am until 1pm.
