BOROUGH Mayor Cllr Rob Stanton held a magic night out on Saturday February 17 – and boosted the coffers of his charity of the year in the process.
The Magical Fundraising Ball saw more than 100 people gather at the Hilton St Anne’s Manor hotel in London Road for an evening of fundraising fun.
Guests – including Bracknell MP Dr Phillip Lee, Earley Town Mayor Cllr Michael Firmager and Wokingham Town Mayor Cllr Peter Lucey – were serenaded by Ruby and the Tri-tones as they arrived, invited to have their photo taken in a pop-up photo booth and watch amazing close-up magic tricks from Richard Parsons and Kerry Scorah.
The evening’s meal was preceded by a speech from Cllr Stanton, where he outlined his personal cancer journey and explained why his charity of the year was the Cancer Champions Scheme.
A four-course dinner was then served, which was followed by a charity auction led by Cllr David Lee, the deputy leader of Wokingham Borough Council.
Lots included the chance to explore the Arborfield film studios and an opportunity to try flying an Airbus on a flight simulator.
Afterwards, there was music from the Flashback Band, a swing-era group who got people on the dance floor.
Overall, the event had raised more than £9,000 on the night.
Speaking ahead of the event, Cllr Stanton said: “Being told you’ve cancer is one of the most frightening and confusing events to happen in your life. I know. It’s happened to me. But I was very fortunate I had the love and support of my family and friends. But I know that many have to face this alone.
“Cancer Champions will provide information to those who have had a diagnosis, and their loved ones, to help them get all the support they need in this time of crisis and ensure no-one is alone at this time.
“This charity is very close to my heart.”
Cancer Champions is organised by Involve, a local support organisation for voluntary, community and faith groups in Bracknell Forest and Wokingham borough.
