Whatever happens in this election, Maiden Erlegh will have a new councillor as incumbent Tahir Maher is stepping down.

The Conservative candidate is Tim Holton, who was defeated in Hillside in 2019. Stephen Newton, standing for the Lib Dems, has been involved at town council level.

My wife and I have lived in Maiden Erlegh ward since 1991. We raised our family here and both our children attended Loddon Primary School.

Living here gives me a wide experience of the issues facing residents in Earley, from those just setting out in life to those seeking extra help in later years and of course all those in between.

VOTE 2024: Labour can be an effective opposition says its Wokingham leader

For 15 years until 2019 I was a Borough Councillor.  During the last 4 years I have needed to concentrate on family issues, thankfully now resolved. I hadn’t intended to be re-involved in local politics.

However the inaction of Maiden Erlegh’s Lib Dem Councillors and the “less for more” policies of the Coalition running the council has compelled me to seek your support to again represent our local community.

Talking with residents 4 years ago, the issue that came up was “please keep our weekly refuse collection.” I’m hearing that even louder now on the doorsteps as the coalition-led council is changing to fortnightly collections.  Hundreds of local residents here supported our petition forcing a Council debate to keep weekly bin collections.

Councillors should listen and respect the views of residents yet the LibDem/Labour Coalition are scrapping weekly waste collections and have stopped supplying food waste caddy liners. We need to be encouraging more food waste collection not deterring people!

The road maintenance budget is being cut in real terms yet never have the roads in Earley been in such a bad state of repair.  The number of pot holes is a disgrace!

Please lend me your vote and I will be a strong, local voice representing Maiden Erlegh residents on the Council.

I moved to Earley in 2007 in my work with a global financial services company. I am married with two grown-up children who attended Loddon Primary School where I was chair of governors.

I took early retirement last year to focus on what I want to do in the community.

I am on the Leadership Team at Lower Earley Baptist Church, help with a children’s mid-week youth club and am part of a badminton club when not busy being a Lib Dem campaigner.

Before moving to Earley, I was chair of a community association representing 15,000 residents and local businesses in Shoeburyness in Essex and Chair of the user group for the C2C Rail line.

I have been an active campaigner for many years and am proud of what I have achieved.

I want to use my experience to benefit residents in Maiden Erlegh and across Wokingham Borough if elected.
