Wokingham Today has reached out to all political parties with candidates standing in the forthcoming local elections. Every party has been offered the opportunity to provide a manifesto-style column to appeal to voters, and over the next week will be publishing those received. Today, it’s the turn of the Independent Edward Shaw.
He said::”I started life with work experience at 14/15 years old working with deputy prime minister John Prescot when Labour came into power..
After Gordon Brown, I became Conservative, having worked with Gavin Barwell. I suppose over the years I have become disenfranchised from politics in the sense that politics should, and must always be, about the people.
“I have always wanted to stand, but never had the opportunity in which to do so. Until now.
“I am currently a director for a major global consultancy company.
“I am standing as an Independent because by the very nature of the political landscape currently, people are angry, frustrated, scared, and just want the basics dealt with.
“Of course this is not national politics, at a borough level services are decreasing, and tax is going up.
“It is insane that residents are subject to a complete and utter failure of party politics that has delivered nothing but a result of desperation for people.
“If elected, I will put residents first always — free from party politics, focused solely on what matters to our community.
“My priority is to be visible, accessible, and accountable. I will listen to your concerns, respond promptly, and ensure your voice is heard in council decisions.
“I will work to protect the character of our area while ensuring that development is appropriate, sustainable, and supported by the infrastructure we need. This means pushing for better roads, school places, healthcare provision, and green spaces.
“Supporting local services is essential. I will advocate for well-maintained roads and pavements, improved waste services, and safer streets. I will also work closely with community groups, local businesses, and volunteers to strengthen our local networks and support initiatives that make our area a better place to live.
“Financial responsibility will be at the heart of my approach. I will challenge unnecessary spending, promote transparency, and ensure council tax is used effectively to deliver real value for residents.
“I am committed to protecting our environment by supporting practical, locally focused initiatives.
“Above all, I will act independently, guided by evidence, common sense, and the views of residents—not party lines. My decisions will always be based on what is best for our community.
“This is a commitment to serve with integrity, to stand up for local people, and to work tirelessly on your behalf.”
