In 2019, Michael Firmager won nearly two-thirds of the vote. His nearest challenger was the Green party candidate, who had just under a fifth of the vote.
This time round, there is no Lib Dem candidate, and this makes an interesting contest. If voters follow national opinion poll trends, could the Conservatives see their share decrease, seeing the borough return its first Green councillor?

The candidates
Merv Boniface, Green

I am proud to stand as your Sonning Green Party candidate in the local council elections.
I have lived in the Wokingham area for four decades, and served the community as Deputy Head at the Bulmershe School for 20 years. I have deep roots in the local area and care passionately about protected our shared green spaces.
The Green Party will stand up for residents against the rapid overdevelopment in Wokingham. Electing a green means a strong voice for Sonning on the local council.
With your help, Greens can win in Sonning.
- We will work towards carbon neutrality by 2030.
- We will provide support for residents to insulate homes
- We will protect our shared green spaces
- We will prioritise development on brownfield sites
- We will fight to protect our wildlife and environment
- We will plant trees across Wokingham borough
- We will build and improve our cycle routes
- We will develop local renewable energy
- We will reduce plastic consumption
- We will drive cleaner air initiatives
We came in close second to the Conservatives last time around. We feel it’s time for a Green voice on Wokingham council to stand up for the interests of residents and put local priorities first.
With your help, we can win in Sonning.
Michael Firmager, Conservative

It has been an honour and privilege to represent the residents of Sonning & Warren since 2019.
I have a good working relationship with both Sonning Parish Council and Woodley Town Council.
I campaign on local issues such as working for safer roads by managing traffic flow and reducing speeding/dangerous driving, for example on the A4.
I enjoy helping local residents and think it’s essential to regularly knock on doors to discuss your concerns and listen to your views.
Protecting the environment is another of my priorities, by speaking out and making representations against inappropriate development.
I was born in Hampshire, but have lived most of my life in Earley where I was educated. Living locally, I share the concerns of residents of Sonning and Warren and want to ensure this remains a great place to live.
If, with your kind support I am re-elected, I look forward to continuing serving you.
Philippa Hills, Labour
