A JUNIOR fundraiser determined to cycle to Paris has started an 18 week training programme to help him get there.
Dexter Rosier, 11, plans to pedal to the French capital in time for this year’s Paralympics, to raise money for Sport In Mind, Wheelpower, and his teacher’s young son Theo who has fanconi anaemia, a rare genetic disorder that causes gradual bone marrow failure.
“Training is going well,” said Dexter.
“It’s good fun, and sometimes it’s hard too.
“But I’m already finding I can cycle for longer, and I can run faster too.
“My friends think it’s quite cool, and they’ve been Googling my name during computer studies at school.
“I do know a tiny bit of French, so I should be able to say, ‘je m’appelle Dexter,’ and maybe even ask the way to Paris.
“I’m definitely very excited.”
Fitness manager Dave Covey, is currently helping Dexter to build up his stamina for the 230 mile ride, on a watt bike at Bulmershe Leisure Centre.
The plan is to train indoors first before taking to the borough’s roads.
And in August Dexter will cycle to France with trainer Dave, People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Daniel Johnson, and businessman Richard Forte.
Their route has now been confirmed: one day one they will travel from Woodley to Portsmouth, to catch a night ferry to Caen.
Once in France the group will cycle from Caen to Évreux, and the next morning, from Évreux to Paris.
“A van will follow with supplies and first aid,” said Ms Rosier.
“Enterprise car rental company has sponsored the van, and Places Leisure is providing Dexter’s training.
“We’re so grateful for their support.”
This is not the Woodley youngster’s first fundraising foray.
His determination to raise money for good causes has already gained him something of a reputation in the borough.
He has previously run, cycled, and even camped out in his garden for months to support charities, and was recognised by Pride Of Reading in 2021, and at last year’s Wokingham Community Awards, when he was proclaimed Young Hero Of The Year.
“I’m so proud of Dexter, and of the work he’s putting in,” said Ms Rosier.
Dexter plans to leave Woodley on Sunday, August 25, to arrive in Paris on Tuesday, August 27.
