A Wokingham market trader performed a citizen’s arrest to apprehend a thief whilst on holiday.
Flower trader Darren Phillips was on holiday in Teneriefe with his girlfriend having an ice cream when he witnessed a man being robbed.
He told Wokingham Today: “I saw a guy window shopping, with another guy brazenly unzipping his man bag and removing his wallet and mobile phone.”
Darren acted instinctively. He thought: “I’m not having that” and grabbed the thief, asking a nearby shopkeeper to call the Police.
Darren held him until the Police eventually arrived.
Saying he is aware how much information is held on mobile phones, he added: “I’m just glad I was able to help to save his holiday.”
Asked whether he’d do it again, he said: “I would certainly be careful if I saw something like that happening again.”
Both the victim and thief are understood to be locals.
