There is a mystery in Wokingham this evening of a suspect item found on a building site that caused three major roads to be closed.
Tonight, the roads are open again and it is thought that the item – originally thought to be a Second World War bomb – it is actually a item of dumped rubbish.
Details are still emergency but police and fire crews were called to Bell Foundry Lane in Wokingham around 3pm on Wednesday, May 9.
An item had been found close to Eldridge Park, a new housing estate being built behind Cantley Park.
As a precaution, police closed Twyford Road and Matthewsgreen Lane as well as Bell Foundry Lane. Homes were also evacuated.
Coming around rush hour, it snarled up traffic with residents reporting on social media that routine journeys were taking an hour.
But…
The roads have been reopened and a cylinder lies next to a spade outside Eldridge Park, close to the roundabout that connects Bell Foundry Land with Twyford Road.
Next to the cylinder lies a spade, abandoned for the day.
The tape from the fire brigade’s cordon flutters from a lamppost and all is calm again.
It appears that this is a false alarm and the bomb is actually a gas cylinder – it’s too narrow to be a milk churn.
