A former mayor in Bracknell has been jailed for three years after helping her son conceal evidence linked to the rape of a teenage girl.
Naheed Ejaz, 61, who previously served as mayor of Bracknell Forest, was convicted of perverting the course of justice following a trial at Winchester Crown Court.
Her son, Diwan Khan, 41, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping a 15-year-old girl.
The court heard that police attended Ejaz’s home in September 2024 to arrest Khan. During the visit, she delayed officers from entering and spoke to her son, allowing him time to hide a mobile phone believed to contain key evidence.
The device was not recovered.
The judge said Ejaz had chosen to protect her son despite the seriousness of the offence, and that her actions risked undermining the investigation.
Jurors were told Khan had given the victim a drink which caused her to lose consciousness before carrying out the assault.
A court heard that the girl failed her GCSEs and tried to kill herself following the attack.
The court heard he later used a recording of the incident to threaten her.
In a statement, the victim described the lasting impact on her mental health and education.
Khan was jailed for 12 years and made subject to additional restrictions.
Ejaz received a three-year prison sentence for assisting him.
