A charity has set up food donation bins across the borough in aid of Wokingham foodbank.
The Wokingham Lions have put six donation bins in businesses including three Co-operative Foods in Montague Park, Matthews Green and California Crossroads.
Others have been put in the Kimel Café on Evendons Lane, Jacksons Café in California Country Park, and The Stables Café in Arborfield Green.
John Clearly, a volunteer from the Wokingham Lions which is a community group which supports the less fortunate, said: “The idea is to help the foodbank beat the ever-increasing demands on its services – it is quite easy to forget the work that they do.”
Also working as a volunteer delivery driver at the foodbank, Mr Clearly said that demands on services are ‘still high’, and it ‘desperately needs’ more support.
Mr Clearly said that the aim of the scheme was to put donation bins in areas where residents don’t have access to large supermarkets – many of which already have their own collection points.
He noted that the bins were already starting to be filled but that it would be a ‘slow burn’ as more people become aware of the scheme.
His organisation would like to install another ten across the Wokingham borough, but that these have ‘got to be in the right places’.
The Reading Lions provide a similar scheme, with donation points across Reading and Tilehurst.
Wokingham Lions Club has helped the community since 1974, and currently has 45 members. It hosts social events and festivities throughout the year including May Fayre and Bonfire Night.
