1. Dinton Pastures Country Park
Hurst, Berkshire
Distance from Wokingham: 4 miles
Just up the road, Dinton Pastures is a sprawling 335-acre oasis built around a series of large lakes.
Why it’s great: An award-winning massive wooden play park and miles of flat, accessible paths loop around the lakes.
The Cost: The park itself is free to enter, though parking charges apply.
2. The Museum of English Rural Life (The MERL)
Redlands Road, Reading
Distance from Wokingham: 7.6 miles
A surprisingly engaging dive into the history of the countryside that is brilliantly set up for children.
Why it’s great: Kids can climb on a real tractor, get hands-on with historical farming equipment, and explore the lovely enclosed garden.
The Cost: General admission is completely free.
3. Swinley Forest
Bracknell
Distance from Wokingham: 6.6 miles
Managed by the Crown Estate, Swinley Forest offers 2,600 acres of woodland to explore, with a focus on cycling and walking.

5. Windsor Great Park (Virginia Water)

A slightly longer drive, but well worth it for the sheer scale and beauty of the Royal landscape.
Why it’s great: Walk around the massive Virginia Water lake, spot the impressive Cascade waterfall, and explore genuine Roman Ruins.

6. Finchampstead Ridges & Simon’s Wood
Wellingtonia Avenue, Finchampstead
Distance from Wokingham: 4 miles
Owned by the National Trust, this is a beautiful spot for a woodland walk that doesn’t cost a penny.

Just past Newbury, this wildlife trust site is designed with families in mind, offering a brilliant introduction to local ecology.
Why it’s great: Easy lakeside walks, age-appropriate adventure playgrounds built into the environment, and interactive wildlife trails.

9. South Hill Park Grounds
Ringmead, Bracknell
Distance from Wokingham: 5 miles
While known primarily as an arts centre, the sprawling grounds surrounding the beautiful mansion are a destination in their own right.
Why it’s great: Formal gardens, yew tree walks, woods, and ponds that are very contained and safe for toddlers.

10. Bray Lake watersports
Monkey Island Lane, Windsor
Distance from Wokingham: ~10.4 miles
While booking a watersports course here can be pricey, visiting the lake for a walk is a great, cheap way to spend an afternoon.
Why it’s great: It’s great fun to walk the perimeter of a peaceful lake and watch people attempting paddleboards, windsurfers, and dinghies.
