A cyclist has been seriously injured after an e-scooter rider crashed into her in Reading.

Elaine Parry was cycling with a friend at the A33 junction with Rose Kiln Lane on Sunday, August 2, when the rider hit her.

She has been left with a head injury, bruising to her face, a fracture to her upper left arm and cuts to her fingers.

Ms Parry, from Tilehurst, said: “I could see that he was approaching fast. I went out so that I’d try to avoid him, but he hit me head on.

“He didn’t get anything done to him. I hit the brakes, then went over the handlebars.

“Apparently his scooter went underneath the bike, I just didn’t see, it was gone, I had hit my head on the pavement.

What Wokingham renters need to know about the biggest shake-up in years

“I said, ‘what kind of speed were you doing?’

“For a start, if you approach a corner, you would have hit the brakes.

“So what the hell was he doing at that speed?

“And I thought he was going to actually say something. I said, ‘why would you do that?’

“And he just looked at me, and he didn’t say a word. I thought he was going to say something, at least something.

“I just couldn’t get over it because I’ve just been hit by him.

“I’m just not understanding why on earth he would ever do that speed for.

“Apparently he passed my friend doing about 30mph I think, it was just before that corner.

“I was doing 3mph, and I saw him going fast, so I thought, right, I’ll get out of the way of him. So I went to the left, as quick as I could.

“I could see him doing a mad speed, and he went bam right into me.

“But I didn’t want to go too near to the road where I was positioned. I’d be in the road and the traffic.

“I thought, ‘how the hell did he hit me?’ But anyway, he did, and this is as a result, I’ve got loads of stitches.”

She has been to the Royal Berkshire Hospital but will require repeat visits.

Ms Parry stated the e-scooter was destroyed by police as privately owned e-scooters are illegal to use on public roads and paths.

She said: “I could feel when I hit the concrete, it was ever so quick.

“Somebody put the rag over my head and pressed down to stop the bleeding.

“I was bleeding like hell. I could feel it bleeding or sore because of the salt, I suppose. But as soon as they let go of that cloth, then I could see.

“It was the bloody madness of it, total madness.

“The ambulance came, they helped me up, and I thought, God, well I can see at least.

“I was just a bit bloody annoyed with him to say the least.”

Thames Valley Police is investigating the crash and is appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “We are appealing for witnesses following a road traffic collision involving an e-scooter and a bicycle which occurred at around 4.50pm on Sunday, August 8 at the A33 junction with Rose Kiln Lane, Reading.

“The cyclist, a woman in her sixties, sustained facial injuries which required medical treatment. The rider of the e-scooter did not sustain any injuries.

“An investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances of the collision. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could assist our enquiries is asked to contact Thames Valley Police on 101 or make a report online, quoting reference 43260398328.”
