DAN BATEMAN says he is excited by young prospect Connor Holland, who has made a flying start to his first team Sumas career.
The 17-year-old bagged his first senior goal after coming off the bench in the second half against Bicester last month to put the game to bed at Larges Lane and get Wokingham up and running for the campaign with a 5-1 win.
Danny Blatchford, George Marsh (2) and Sam Lawrence were also on target for the Sumas while teenage goalkeeper Felix Davies again impressed to keep Bicester out until the closing stages.
And Bateman had praise for his youngsters.
“Felix has done really well for us,” the Sumas boss told The Wokingham Paper.
“He’s a young lad, he’s got the physique of a goalkeeper and his shot-stopping and everything else has been outstanding.
“He was probably our best player against Aldermaston and then against Bicester as well, he had very little to do but then pulled out a brilliant save just before we scored our second.
“Felix has got to a big future in the game.”
He added: “Connor really excites me.
“His movement is exceptional. He scores goals. I think he scored six throughout pre-season and he’s gone straight into a league fixture and scored as well.
“He’s a very young lad, new to senior football but he has taken to it really well and certainly the rest of the lads are really excited about what he has to offer.
“He’s going to have a big season for us as well I’m sure.”
Davies again started between the sticks when Wokingham went to Burnham on Saturday, but could not prevent a 4-2 Hellenic One East defeat.
Holland came off the bench but it was fellow youth team star Josh Harris who broke the deadlock, while Sam Lawrence was also on target in the loss.
Sumas go to Abingdon Town on Saturday (3pm).
