WOKINGHAM Town Council has commissioned a local craft group to make post box toppers as part of an event to celebrate the coronation of King Charles.
The Barkham Hookers will be making 20 to 25 crocheted pillar box decorations for people to find, in and around Wokingham.
Although the coronation is not taking place until May, Wokingham residents should see their pillar boxes decorated by the end of March.
“Families will be able to hunt for them during the Easter holidays,” says Barkham Hookers leader Gaynor White.
“Wokingham Town Council gave us a list of 12 town centre post boxes they would like us to decorate, but members of the group make toppers for their local boxes too, so there will be a total of around 20 or 25.
“Many will be within walking distance of the town centre, with others in the surrounding villages that can be cycled to.”
The group will be able to re-work some of the pieces they made to honour the Queen last year.
“We were very busy making toppers for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and then to commemorate her death,” says Gaynor.
“It will be lovely to be able to celebrate the royal family in better circumstances this year, and to decorate the boxes, this time, for the King’s coronation.”
Katy Hughes, Wokingham Town Council’s town clerk says: “ There should be a number of regal themed creations, with crowns, the King, maybe corgis – does King Charles have corgis?
“We’re hoping to be able to produce a map so that people can follow the trail to find all the decorations.
“And because the Barkham Hookers are making them ready for the end of March, it will be a nice outdoor family activity for the Easter holidays.”
