More than 100 members of Inner Wheel and guests assembled at Benson Parish Hall on Wednesday, January 10, to take part in the ‘100 for 100’ initiative to celebrate the centenary of Inner Wheel.
After demonstrations of Morris and folk dances by the Shinfield Shambles Border Morris Group, they were let loose, with some trepidation, on the floor to have a go themselves. Some chaos ensued along with lots of laughter and much enjoyment, followed by a delicious buffet lunch.
Inner Wheel as an organisation – its name emphasising the strong links it maintains with Rotary – was formed in 1924 in Manchester to complement Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland.
It became international in 1967, and clubs have spread to 104 countries with 108,000 members worldwide, 9,500 approximately being in Great Britain and Ireland.
It is now one of the largest worldwide organisations for women with membership now open to all since April 2012.
The Inner Wheel Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh meets monthly at Sonning Golf Club, usually on the third Thursday of the month, for a chat and a drink at 7.15pm for 7.45pm.
Then, there is a two-course meal which is usually followed by an interesting speaker.
We are continuing to support community projects like The Cowshed and The Book Bus.
The Inner Wheel Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh was founded in 2002 and has approximately 40 members.
