BURNLEY boss Vincent Kompany insists equalling Reading’s Championship points record is not his biggest priority in the final weeks of the season.
The Clarets were held to a goalless draw at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Saturday, meaning they can now only equal the 106 point mark, set by the Royals in 2005/06.
The Belgian wants to use the run-in to prepare his side before they get “thrown into the deep end” of the Premier League next season.
When asked about equalling the record post-match, Kompany was unsure if the chase was still on.
He said: “Is it still alive? I thought it was done. I can’t go back on what I said to one of your colleagues – I said it doesn’t matter.
“Look, I could get fixated on that, but what matters more to me is that we’re going to get thrown into the deep end next season where every game will be tough.
“Every little bit I can see now, every bit of preparation, that’s my biggest focus.
“Don’t get me wrong, I want us to win the league, I want us to win every game, I want us to go out with a bang, but I don’t want us to go out with questions. Sometimes losing is also an answer, and that’s more important at this moment in time.”
The champions-elect made six changes to the starting 11 which secured victory over Sheffield United on Easter Monday.
Reading battled hard to secure a valuable point in interim boss Noel Hunt’s first game in charge following the dismissal of Paul Ince.
“It’s the fourth or fifth time that we’ve had to face an opponent who’s just released their manager a week before. So unfortunately I have to say we’re a bit used to it,” Kompany explained.
“We knew we had to be flexible, we had a number of ideas of what we wanted to do today. We were always going to react to what we saw and as soon as we saw how they set up I think we knew how to approach it.
“That’s why I think we’ve done really well because we didn’t know what we were going to face, and yet I think this game was played like most games we’ve played this season and that’s a good thing to see.”
