Long-suffering users of the A329M will be facing another week of roadworks – but road bosses are confident that this will be the final stretch and the road’s management can be handed back to Wokingham Borough Council.
Highways England have been running a year-long project to improve access to and from the M4 for motorists on the A329M. This has seen the A329M separated into two single-lane motorways – one carriageway for traffic going on to the M4 and the second for drivers staying on the A329M.
We have reported numerous accidents, near misses, confusion and delays as a result of the new layout, with motorists saying that journeys that used to take them 15 minutes is now taking up to an hour.
Next week, Highways England will be working around the A329M sliproads to junction 10 of the M4 to install new signs. Diversions will be in place while road closures take place.
In the updated bulletin of works that the agency will carry out it said:
“Work to install additional lane designation signs to aid drivers using the junction finishes this week. The slip roads and merge onto the A329(M) Wokingham-bound carriageway will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Monday 25 January for 5 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A329(M) Reading-bound carriageway and the Winnersh Triangle junction.”
A spokesperson from Highways England told The Wokingham Paper that this will be the final week of the roadworks and once completed, it will hand back responsibility of the road’s management to Wokingham Borough Council (WBC).
They said: “Once this is finished the road will be handed over to WBC, who have been involved throughout.”
