Wokingham Today has reached out to all political parties with candidates standing in the forthcoming local elections. Every party has been offered the opportunity to provide a manifesto-style column to appeal to voters, and over the next week will be publishing those received. Today, it’s the turn of the Green party.
A spokesperson told Wokingham Today: “For the first time, the Green party is standing candidates in all wards across Wokingham, with the potential of earning 20 councillors.
Green councillors would work tirelessly within and outside of the council chamber to make our borough cleaner, safer and fairer for all our citizens.
Here are ten things Green councillors will push to do:
Cleaner:
-
Support better bus routes to reduce traffic and air pollution.
-
Increase no-idling zones in built-up areas to reduce exhaust fumes.
-
Tidy our public spaces.
Safer:
-
Tackle the illegal and dangerous use of e-bikes and e-scooters.
-
Increase road safety in roads where residents identify risks.
-
Improve lighting along paths where residents have told us they feel unsafe in the dark.
Fairer:
-
Reduce energy bills by engaging with renewable energy and insulation initiatives.
-
Promote sustainable and accessible transport solutions, with better links to stations.
-
Introduce a lending library of tools and equipment.
-
Provide opportunities for residents, focusing initially on our young people and people with disabilities.
In other boroughs, Green councillors have introduced training programmes for new jobs, created adult education and skills hubs, insulated homes, expanded housing for vulnerable people, protected green spaces, improved public transport and increased the safety of school streets.
Wokingham Greens would bring these positive changes to our area.
Each of our policies have been suggested by residents, and have come from discussions with local people on their doorsteps.
We have listened and will continue to listen to what matters to our residents.
We have a strong and committed group of candidates, each passionate about what would help others across our borough.
The Green party is polling higher than ever before.
We are winning council seats as well as a parliamentary by-election, proving that voters are choosing hope over hate and action over inaction.
A vote for the Green party in Wokingham is a vote for a better present and a better future.”
