Reading will return from their tour of Austria unbeaten after a second draw of the week.

Fresh from their 2-2 comeback against Besiktas in Graz on Tuesday, the Royals moved onto Ilz to take on Russian outfit Rubin Kazan and played out a goalless stalemate.

In a game with fewer clear cut chances to the Besiktas clash, Reading went closest to scoring through Marc McNulty while Rubin struck the post and were only denied a late winner by a Liam Moore header off the line.

The draw means Reading are still winless in pre-season with three draws and two defeats ahead of their final friendly against Crystal Palace at Madejski Stadium on July 28 before the Championship season begins on August 3 against Derby County.

Reading began with a 4-4-2 as Marc McNulty was handed his first start for the club, alongside Yakou Meite, while Andy Rinomhota and Pelle Clement formed an unfamiliar central midfield duo.

The Royals started well, breaking down the left and linking up well before McNulty fired straight at the keeper from the edge of the box.

Vito Mannone kept a clean sheet

But the Russian outfit responded, regularly trying their luck from distance with Igor Konovalov going closest.

And Reading got a slice of luck on 10 minutes when a short backpass was reached by Vito Mannone, but he cannoned his clearance straight into a Rubin man, but the ball bounced just wide of the post.

Mo Barrow was looking like the main threat for Reading down the left and although Clement and Rinomhota were impressing in central midfield, Rubin Kazan were the better side for much of the first half and struck the post with a deflected strike from the edge of the box.

Former Swansea City defender Chico Flores also volleyed over the bar before the half was out.

Both sides made big changes during the second half which halted the flow of a game which was already struggling to liven up.

Rubin should have taken the lead around the hour mark when the lively Sardar Azmoun played in Aleksandr Bukharov, but he prodded wide.

They then looked to catch the Royals cold with a quick free-kick, but Mannone was equal to the shot from distance and the resulting scramble from the corner was headed off the line by Moore.

Reading finally tested the goalkeeper again as the game entered its final minutes as Barrow clipped a cross into the centre for substitute John Swift, but his close range effort was acrobatically tipped away and the game ended level.
