A potential world record was set in Finchampstead last weekend, as Sand Martins golf course played host to the UK Speedgolf Pairs Championship.
The Finchampstead Road course played host to fourteen pairs of golfers from around the country on Sunday.
The event requires pairs of golfers to shoot the lowest score in the quickest time.
The game was played using a foursome format, with each pair navigating the course with a single ball, and alternating shots.
Armed with up to seven clubs each, teams set off at five‐minute intervals to conquer the course and achieve the lowest Speedgolf Score – a combination of time and golf strokes.
Professional golfers Luke Bone and Luke Willett won the competition with what has been described as an explosive, pace‐busting performance.
They competed the 18-hole, 4.36 mile Par 70 course in 86 strokes in a time of just 37 minutes and 43 seconds – an unofficial world record.
A spokesperson for British Speedgolf told Wokingham Today: “We were delighted to bring the Speedgolf Pairs Championship to Sand Martins.
“The course was a tough challenge for golf, worthy of a national championship, but was relatively flat (only 103 ft of elevation) so proved perfect for speedgolf.
The winning time remains an unofficial record at present.
The spokesperson added: “This is the fastest pairs time recorded at any Speedgolf event anywhere globally, but it takes some time for the International Speedgolf Alliance to recognise any records officially on review of evidence, and the same for endorsement by Guinness – which is a lengthy process.”
Anticipation is already mounting for the next UK Speedgolf Championship ‐ the prestigious British Open Speedgolf Championships – which will take place at Sunningdale Heath on September 15, 2024.
