A CHRISTMAS adventure is coming to Wokingham this Saturday – and it includes a session specifically for children with additional needs.
A special winter village is being erected in the home of Kings Church in Station Road and it will open its doors for one day only.
The Winter Wonderland includes crafts, face painting, stories, a treasure hunt and even a visit from Santa.
The event will be split into three sessions, all aimed at under sevens. Two are open to everyone and one session aimed specifically aimed at families with children with additional needs who may find the other sessions too overwhelming.
Justine Baston, a member of Kings Church who is helping to organise the event, told The Wokingham Paper: “We have built a police station, a post office where children can post a card to Santa, a robin’s house and a church with stained glass windows.
“There will be Christmas craft, face painting, a treasure hunt in a winter village and a story corner where Santa will read to the children every hour. There will also be tea, coffee and cakes”.
“When you go in you are given a bag with make believe money. You can then spend the money on market stalls and buy satsumas and gingerbread men.
To help make the event even more special, local supermarkets are donating goods Tesco is supplying gingerbread men and Christmas decorations, Sainsbury’s is giving gluten free gingerbread men and Morrisons will donate satsumas.
And the church is pleased to be offering the session for children with additional needs who find crowded places and lots of noise to difficult, featuring tailored activities.
“The lights will be up and the music will be down,” said Ms Baston. “You will have to book to get in this session so there won’t be as many people in there.”
The Winter Wonderland will open at 9.30am to noon and between 2pm to 4.30pm for the general public. The special session for children with additional needs runs from 12.30pm to 2pm and places need to be booked. Entry for both sessions is £2 per child and siblings are welcomed.
