ON WORLD Book Day, Wokingham diners were able to celebrate five famous writers over lunch.
Staff at WADE Day Centre not only dressed up as literary characters, but adorned the centre’s dining tables with book-themed decorations.
It was the inspiration of WADE cook Ronnie, who went to town on the literary lunch on the same day that WADE launched its new book corner.
Tables represented J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Agatha Christie’s Murder on The Orient Express, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five stories, and Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Sitting at the Murder on The Orient Express table, with its model train, and railway ticket placemats, Rodney said: “It’s really clever what the staff have done, and I’d have worn my waistcoat if I’d known.”
Asked what his favourite book was, quick as a flash, he quipped: “A cheque book – used to be a ration book.”
On the Harry Potter table, golden snitches chocolates lay beside Harry’s glasses and a wand, and in every diner’s glass was a good measure of butter beer.
And what else could there be but ham sandwiches and lashings of ginger beer on the Famous Five table, while feathers and jewellery adorned The Great Gatsby table, and flowers and a candle graced that of Pride and Prejudice.
It was a meal to remember.
The WADE Day Centre provides subsidised day care for seniors in the Wokingham Borough, with a warm and friendly environment in which to mix and socialise.
Some come for lunch, a change of scene, and the opportunity to see friends.
Others with early stage dementia can enjoy a day out in safe, caring and stimulating surroundings, while caregivers gain much-needed respite.
With a few spaces currently available in the day care centre, WADE invites people to contact the organisation for information.
