The man behind the Wokingham flag at this year’s World Cup has been revealed as none other than Nick Ashwell, son of Wokingham Town Football Club president, and the borough councillor in charge of sport, Mark.
The flag was seen by millions of television viewers at last week’s friendly in the United States between England and Costa Rica, and was also mentioned on the BBC’s Five Live’s radio commentary of the game.
Wokingham-born Nick now lives in Dublin, Ireland, and he’ll be returning to the US in the coming weeks for several of England’s group matches.
Speaking exclusively to Wokingham Today, Mark said he’s ‘certainly aware of the exposure he’s given to the town.’
Electrical wholesaler Nick has also taken the flag with him on his travels watching England cricket matches too, and met his wife Gloria while following cricket in New Zealand.
The flag itself is well travelled, having been to Brazil, Russia and South Africa – and is regularly seen at Wokingham Town’s home at Lowther Road in Emmbrook, where it had pride of place in the clubhouse for the Qatar World Cup in 2022.
