Local authority salaries
The Tax Payer’s Alliances’(TPA) annual moan about local authorities and their workers’ salary scale is laughable.
Do they want services to be carried out for free?
It’s about time we re-framed the paying of taxes from being seen as a burden but as a positive community undertaking.
Yes, local and central tax collection needs to be reformed into a much fairer system but not at the expense of already low paid workers.
I wonder what they think about those failing and under-achieving privatised services in which shareholders collect massive dividends and their senior executives receive eye-watering annual salaries and bonuses?
The salaries of local authority executives are miniscule by comparison.

The memorial cross
I wish to add my full support to Ted O’Neil’s call for the memorial cross to be returned to its rightful place at the junction near Jubilee Hill. The cross was a truly majestic landmark, originally erected to honour local men from the surrounding villages who fell in the First World War. It was long associated with overlooking the meeting point of the three counties. Its removal feels deeply disrespectful to the fallen it was meant to commemorate. Since the removal of the cross, there has been an unfortunate rise in accidents. Where many of us, I’m sure feel the junction has never felt the same and unsettled what was once a place of solemn remembrance.

Twyford station parking
Dear editor,
I’m afraid Councillor Adrian Betteridge is living in cloud cuckoo land if he thinks the answer to the problems at Twyford Station is expecting people to take to two wheels and cycle to and from it. Who on earth is going to get up at the crack of dawn (or before) in the middle of winter when it’s cold, dark and most often raining or frosty to do so? And that doesn’t even address the many potholes waiting to send cyclists to their doom or account for the fact that, for the elderly or disabled, the possibility of cycling is complete folly. The 50 extra car parking spaces being talked about won’t even touch the sides. Stop dithering and get a two storey facility like the one at Wokingham station built and double capacity in one fell swoop.
