WOKINGHAM Town Council’s Wokingham in Bloom team of volunteers looks after a number of green spaces in the borough, including a garden at Westende Junior School.
Through the school holidays, said the group, there’s still plenty to do in the garden.
This year, despite a very prolonged dry season, there was a bumper summer harvest at the school to bring in.
A small group of children, parents, and Wokingham in Bloom volunteers recently rolled up their sleeves to tend the school garden.
With weeds to pull, and plants to water there were plenty of jobs to keep everyone busy, said the group, but the rewards made it all worthwhile.
There was lots of fresh produce ready to be harvested, including potatoes and runner beans in abundance.
One of the Bloom volunteers said: “You never get tired of seeing the children digging up potatoes or discovering just how much their vegetables have grown.
“Their squeals of excitement and smiling faces say it all.
“The gardening club is about so much more than gardening.
“We’re helping children connect with nature, learn where food comes from, build confidence and have lots of fun along the way.
Wokingham In Bloom thanks everyone who continues to help care for the Westende garden over the summer holidays.
It says their hard work is helping it flourish.
