ORGANISERS of a Wokingham church fete say that it was a festive success.
St Paul’s Church Bazaar took place in the Parish Rooms at the weekend, with a tombola, and a range of stalls selling children’s games, books, bric-a-brack, cakes and gifts.
The event was opened by Wokingham’s town mayor, councillor Sally Gurney.
Organiser Teri Austin, said: “It all went very well indeed.
“There was a lovely festive atmosphere, it was really buzzing, and you could tell that people were enjoying themselves.
“Organist Christopher Cipkin gave a concert in the church of Music For The Season Of Remembrance, and after the performance people in the audience came over to the Parish Rooms to see what was going on and joined in the fun.’
As well as teas and coffees, visitors this year were also able to enjoy lunches.
“The lunches were a great success, our social committee really did themselves proud,” said Ms Austen.
“I think we’ll be serving meals again.”
St Paul’s Bazaar is an important fundraiser for the church, particularly so this year.
A large oak tree in the churchyard is diseased and needs to be felled, and the work will cost several thousand pounds to complete.
“It’s sad, but the tree has to go,” said Ms Austen.
“It’s a big expense that we weren’t expecting, and we will struggle to find the money.
“We had a bat survey done recently, and that alone cost £1,000.”
The bazaar raised £2,000, which go towards general church maintenance and tree felling costs.
