THE MAD Hatter, Harry Potter, and Jaws are just a few of the marvellous creations that have decorated Sonning residents’ front gardens during a fun festival held every other year in the village.
Sonning Scarecrows gives families an opportunity to follow a trail and discover what amusing and clever straw-filled and papier mache characters villagers have dreamed up.
The residents build their scarecrows, and any other kind of model imaginable, and place them in their front gardens where they provide visitors with a fun day of discovery.
The event is very popular, and offers not only a chance to see the scarecrows, but to enjoy visiting open gardens, and view classic cars.
Organiser Barbara Carr, said: “It’s a lovely event, and children very much enjoy ticking off the scarecrows as they find them.
“Everyone works incredibly hard to make this happen, and all the money raised goes right back into the community.
“There are around 50 scarecrows to discover this year, and three gardens to explore.
“On Sunday there will be a display of classic cars too.
“And on both days, tea will be served by members of Sonning Glebe Womens Institute, in the Village Hall.”
To help them find the scarecrows, visitors can buy a map.
Available from stewards at Sonning car parks on arrival in the village, they cost £5 each.
The event takes place on Sunday, May 26, and Monday, May 27, from 11am until 4.30pm on both days.
Parking will be available at The Mill at Sonning, Sonning Farm on Charvil Lane, and Berkshire County Sports Club off sonning Lane, with disabled parking spaces on Pearson Road.
Sonning Lane will be partially closed during the event.
