Plans have been submitted that could see a historic Wokingham building become home to a dental surgery.
The freehold of the British Red Cross building in Denmark Street was purchased by Dr. Navdip S. Sandhu in 2024 after being used by the charity since at least the 1920s.
The new owner, through his agents, has now applied to Wokingham Borough Council for a proposed change of use for the building to accommodate a dental surgery.
The building was used as an orthopaedic clinic for war veterans from the First World War. Historically, it was known as the Wokingham War Memorial Orthopaedic Clinic, evident from engraved plaque that is built into the front elevation of the building.
The more recent history is based on its use as offices by the British Red Cross – since circa 1980 [link] – when the facilities became inadequate for orthopaedic surgeries.
Since then, the premises have been used by the Red Cross as regional headquarters.
