IF YOU’VE never played indoor bowls, but would like to have a go, this new year might be the perfect time to try a taster session.
Whiteknights Indoor Bowls Club is opening its doors to the local community, to give them an opportunity to see whether they might enjoy the sport.
The club is keen to promote its facilities, and to welcome new players.
Potential new members will get the opportunity to try playing bowls with guidance from club coaches and club members.
As well as a guided tour of the club, they will be able to meet members and find out about their enjoyment of the club.
Whiteknights Indoor Bowls Club regularly supports community groups, who use its facilities for social and sporting activities.
Players of all ages and all abilities are encouraged to play, and are offered opportunities to take part in leagues, friendly matches, club matches, fun days, and national competitions.
The club also runs quiz and race nights, live music events, recreation afternoons, bazaars and parties.
As well as providing social and sporting connections for adults in the borough, the club also promotes young people’s sporting talents, and currently sponsors Laurel Park F.C. ‘Hurricanes’ Under 8’s team.
“As a club we are keen to develop our links with the local community,” said Whiteknights Indoor Bowling Club manager Andy Knapper.
“This season sees us working with a number of new groups, including: Parkinson’s, Reading; Age UK; Wokingham Dementia Partnership; The Lions Club; Caversham Blind Bowlers; Wokingham Blind Bowlers; and Young Epilepsy, as well as a number of other local clubs and associations.
“We’re keen to promote our fantastic facilities, and to encourage more people to try bowls at our taster day.”
The green offers bowling facilities on seven rinks, with games displayed on electronic score boards.
Off the green, seating areas and a bar enable players to socialise in comfort, while diners can enjoy breakfasts, lunches, dinners, afternoon teas, and Sunday lunches.
The club is peacefully located within the walled grounds of what used to be the kitchen garden of the old Maiden Erlegh Manor House, and it shares the grounds with the outdoor Maiden Erlegh Bowling Club.
The group’s open event will take place at Whiteknights Indoor Bowling Club, Earley, on Sunday, January 4, between 2.30pm and 6.30pm.
No experience is needed, and bowls (including junior equipment) will be provided.
People are asked to bring clean flat soled shoes or trainers to protect the bowling surface.
Places are limited and need to be booked in advance.
Individual taster sessions can also be arranged should people not be able to attend the try-out day.
