IT’S one of Twyford’s longest standing social clubs, but it now has a 21st century name.
On Saturday, Lady Elizabeth Godsal unveiled a new sign to mark the successful refurbishment of the Twyford Memorial Hall, home of the Twyford Snooker Club.
The short commemoration and celebration service helped mark the centenary of the club, bringing to fruition a five-year plan to hold the event on the date that the then vicar donated the club to the men of the village as they returned from the First World War.
But the gift of the building was not accompanied by funding for future upkeep and the hall had gradually fallen into serious disrepair. The club committee considered closing the building in 2014 as the roof was a danger and insurance was proving difficult to obtain.
But instead, they launched a renovation appeal, raising £56,000 for essential repairs.
And over the past two years extensive work has taken place to ensure the July 13 target date was met.
Club secretary Malcolm George said: “In the past five years, there has been a lot of fundraising to bring the hall back in full operation following a complete re-plastering and painting of the main hall.
“The heating system has been rebuilt with modern radiators and is much more responsive than the old system.”
And now it’s frame on for new members.
“We are a friendly club opened to men and women in Twyford over the age of 65,” Mr George said.
“Membership costs just £50 and each member has their own key which allows 24-hour access. We welcome anyone interested to contact us about membership.”
