Wokingham is going to get a blast from the past in September, when the market celebrates the 800th anniversary of its Market Charter.
The event, organised by Wokingham Town Council, is also being aligned with National ‘Heritage Open Days’ and will take place on Saturday, September 14.
While the medieval theme will be the main focus, different elements from across the centuries will be woven into the occasion. For instance, the expanded modern market will include products that would have been available 800 years ago, such as honey and eggs.
Civic Committee Chair and Cllr David Lee said: “This anniversary is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness of the remarkable heritage of our town.
“We hope that local people and visitors will really engage with the town’s history and enjoy the many ‘medieval’ activities that will be on offer and enjoy our fabulous, bustling market and Market Place.”
Crafts such as spinning, weaving and embroidery will be demonstrated inside the Town Hall, where children and families will be able to join in and try their hand at the historic activities.
Howard Palmer Gardens will be hosting a range of activities, from community apple press, birds of prey on display, have a go archery and a puppet theatre, to name just a few.
All Saints Church will be joining in too, offering guided tours of the inside of their church and the bell tower.
There will be strolling minstrels and performers as well, to keep you entertained in between visiting each historic site.
