Finchampstead remained perched at the top of the Division One table on 157 points, despite being held to a fiercely contested draw by a high-flying Banbury side.
The visitors set a demanding target, grinding their way to 251-9 from their 56 overs. Banbury’s innings was anchored by the in-form Lloyd Sabin, who continued his extraordinary summer with the bat.
Finchampstead’s bowling attack worked tirelessly to keep the visitors from accelerating out of sight, with the bowling tandem of Charlie Hill and David Eaton doing the heavy lifting by sharing six vital wickets between them.
Ultimately, the match petered out into a draw, with the result recorded in Banbury’s favour on points — a result that was enough to elevate Banbury to third in the standings, while Finches maintained their slender lead at the top.
Meanwhile, Wokingham 1st XI played out an agonisingly close encounter away against Aston Rowant.
Aston Rowant batted first and were bowled out for 235, their innings underpinned by a solid 65 from Ethan Barksfield.
Wokingham’s bowling standout was Sachin Sivanandan, who did the early and late damage to finish with a magnificent five-wicket haul (5-55) [1].
The Oaks’ response was incredibly tense and built almost entirely around a stunning century from Gihahn Cloete.
Cloete struck a fine 116 to keep his side in contention throughout the chase, brilliantly supported by Jacob Clark (36).
However, Aston Rowant’s Maximillian Mannering turned the screw with a decisive spell of 4-70.
Wokingham pushed right to the wire but fell just nine runs short, finishing their overs on 226-9.
Aston Rowant claimed the winning draw and the bulk of the points, leaving Wokingham in sixth position and Aston Rowant in seventh as the second half of the season promises plenty of drama [1].
Down in Division 4A of the Thames Valley League, Emmbrook and Bearwood 1st XI hit the road for a highly anticipated clash against Goring on Thames 1st XI at the Gardiner Recreation Ground.
Facing a disciplined Goring outfit on their own turf, the Bears relied heavily on their core unit to maintain their summer momentum.
With the Division 4A table tightening up as July gets underway, this encounter tested the strategic depth of the Emmbrook ranks. In a league format where bonus points dictate promotion pushes, keeping the run rate under control away from home proved to be the ultimate tactical battle for the Lowther Road side.
