A MAN from Earley has been jailed after he failed to stop after a collision which resulted in a pedestrian’s death.
Joseph Wangige, 44, of Courts Road, pleaded guilty at Reading Magistrates’ Court on June 8 to one count of failing to stop at the scene of a collision, failing to report a collision, driving without an MOT, and using a motor vehicle/trailer with equipment likely to cause danger of injury.
He was sentenced on Friday (30)at Reading Crown Court to four months in prison, disqualified from driving for 14 months, and ordered to pay costs.
The charges related to an incident on November 26 last year, when Wangige was driving a Vauxhall Astra in Cemetery Junction, Reading. He was involved in a collision with a pedestrian, Russell William Lee, 32, who suffered serious injuries. He was taken to hospital but died three days later.
Wangige failed to stop at the scene of the incident and was arrested by officers at his home address later that day. The Vauxhall Astra he was driving was located near to Wangige’s home address.
Investigating Officer, Sergeant Richard Grant of the Joint Operations Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Tragically Mr Lee lost his life as a result of this road traffic collision.
“My thoughts remain with his family through what has been a very difficult time for them.
“Wangige has been convicted for not reporting this incident, not stopping at the scene as well as driving a car that had mechanical faults and did not have a valid MOT.
“I am pleased that he will be serving a custodial sentence for this and that he has been banned from driving.”
