GALLERY: Reading FC snatch frustrating point as relegation creeps closer in front of sold out crowd

READING FC’s Championship future is now in the hands of others after they could only manage a draw against bottom of the table Wigan Athletic.

In front of a packed out Select Car Leasing Stadium, ultimately it was a day that ended in disappointment as the Royals’ winless run in the Championship stretched to 12 matches to put their Championship status at further risk.

With both sides in desperate need of a win, the Latics broke the deadlock with just 10 minutes left when Charlie Hughes headed in the opener.

Noel Hunt’s side responded when substitute Yakou Meite bundled in from close range in the aftermath of a corner to give Reading hope three minutes into nine minutes stoppage time.

But neither side could find a vital winner and were both left frustrated at the result.

The draw means that Wigan are relegated to League One, while Reading now wait for the results of other teams which will decide their fate.

The Royals are in 22nd place on 44 points, level with Huddersfield.

Relegation rivals Huddersfield Town have two games in hand. They are away at Cardiff City on Sunday (noon) before they play host to already promoted Sheffield United on Thursday.

Reading then face Huddersfield on the final day of the season on Monday, May 8 in what is potentially a relegation decider.

However, Neil Warnock’s team could secure their safety before that game if they pick up at least four points from their next two matches.

Meanwhile, Rotherham are also in the relegation battle. They are currently two points above Reading and have a game in hand.

They are at home against Middlesbrough tomorrow before they travel to Wigan on the final day.
