On Tuesday, May 14, the Rotary Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh (RCRME) celebrated its 30th birthday in style in the Meadow Suite at the University of Reading.
More than 80 people attended including the Rotary District Governor Gillian Pearce – who leads the 57 Rotary clubs in the Thames Valley – current and founder members of RCRME, members of the Rotary Club of Loddon Vale, Members of Inner Wheel, all complemented by honoured guests and family members.
The birthday party was opened with a recital by cellist Oliver Simpson who had recently been the runner-up in the national final of the Rotary Young Musician competition.
This was followed by a number of light-hearted presentations about the achievements of RCRME since its formation, and a humorous song by one of the Rotarians about what being a member of Rotary meant to him.
During an excellent three-course dinner the participants were able to view a video display on large screens portraying the achievements and enjoyment of Club Members during the past 30 years.
Since it was formed in 1989, RCRME has raised more than £500,000 for more than 80 charities, supported local schools, developed leadership qualities in young adults in addition to humanitarian aid abroad and support for the goal of world-wide elimination of Polio.
At the end of the evening one of the founder members, Geoffrey Scott-Baker, presented the club’s official Rotary International Charter to the current club oresident Sarah Shears.
This Charter, dated February 17, 1989, originally welcomed the fledgling RCRME into the worldwide family of Rotary International that currently has more than 1.2 million Members worldwide located in more than 200 Countries.
