The March meeting of the West Forest Townswomen’s Guild was our AGM and was busy and well attended. All the Executive reports were approved by members and signed and a full committee for the coming year was formed.
The speaker was Dr Stuart Kilpatrick who gave a very moving account of the charitable work undertaken in East Africa by the annual visitation of the Mission Ship.
This stays in the area for 10 months of the year and performs essential operations such as cataracts, hernias, hare lips, growth removal and dental work. In addition, some infections common to the area which result in disfiguration and life-long problems are treated. There is a great demand for this help and staff work very hard to provide it. Many staff provide their own finance to work on the ship.
After the speaker the business continued to notify members of forthcoming events and activity groups which will be help before our April meeting. These include Scrabble, bridge, book club, coffee morning, social studies and a theatre visit.
Members of the Social and Fundraising Committee were presented with orchid plants in recognition of their 20-year service during which thousands of pounds have been raised for various charities. Events will still be arranged for members to enjoy.
Since our February meeting, many members had attended the International Women’s Day lunch held at The Coppid Beech Hotel organised by The Berkshire Federation. More than 120 ladies attended and enjoyed a delicious lunch and two excellent speeches.
The whist drive and supper held in Emmbrook Village Hall at the start of the month proved popular as always and complete our fundraising for the year.
The next meeting of our guild is on Monday, April 15, in Emmbrook Village Hall at 7.30pm.
Visitors and new members are always welcome.
