A SOCIAL and fundraising group appointed two new joint presidents at its AGM recently.
Outgoing president Margaret Adams handed over responsibility for leading the Inner Wheel Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh to last year’s joint vice presidents Gerry Luckhurst and Toni Trathen, who now become president twins.
They are both pleased to become the club’s first presidential duo.
Unusually, their husbands will also be joint presidents – of the linked Rotary Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh.
The Inner Wheel Association of Great Britain and Ireland celebrates its centenary this year.
Founded in Manchester by Rotary wives, its aims were to promote friendship, encourage personal service and foster international understanding.
New presidents Gerry and Toni say that Its original aspirations are just as relevant today as they were in 1924.
The group is celebrating its 100th anniversary by taking on fundraising challenges involving 100 items.
Its forty members are committed to helping people less fortunate than themselves, organising charity fundraising events, such as soup lunches, bridge drives, fashion shows, stalls and fetes to raise money for good causes.
They also enjoy social and fundraising events with partners, friends and members of Rotary, as well as coffee mornings and bring and share meals, a bridge club, book club, theatre club and boat trips.
Their chosen charities this year are: The Link Visiting Scheme and Sue Ryder,
Duchess of Kent Cancer Care Unit in Reading.
But they also support The Cowshed, the annual Macmillan Coffee Morning, and Berkshire Vision.
The club welcomes new members from all nationalities and walks of life.
They meet monthly at Sonning Golf Club for a meal and to hear an invited speaker.
