A Wokingham pub is to close its doors after more than a decade, with its landlords having previously blamed prolonged roadworks for making the business increasingly difficult to run.
The White Horse on Easthampstead Road has announced it will serve its final customers on Saturday, 16 August, with last orders being called that evening.
The pub announced the closure in an emotional social media post, thanking its regulars, neighbours and friends for their support over the years.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce The White Horse is officially closing its doors,” the pub said.
“Our last day of trading will be Saturday, 16th August, with final ‘last orders’ called that evening.”
The announcement comes several months after landlords Tom and Anita McNelly revealed they would be leaving the pub following more than 10 years at the helm.
In April, Mr McNelly said the business had been suffering because of roadworks taking place adjacent to and outside the pub. Greene King, which operates the pub, said at the time it was “very sad” to see the family leave and that it had provided support during the transition.
The prolonged disruption has been linked to construction of the South Wokingham Distributor Road, with closures around Easthampstead Road and Star Lane affecting access to the area.
A more recent report said the White Horse had been “virtually inaccessible” during the works, with the disruption also affecting other local businesses.
Despite the difficulties, the pub continued to receive recognition from customers and the local community. It was listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for 2026 and was named runner-up in Wokingham’s Best Pub competition.
In its farewell message, the pub described itself as much more than a place to drink.
“This pub has always been more than just a place to grab a drink; it was a home away from home, a place of celebration, and a cornerstone of our community,” it said.
“Over the years, you’ve shared your milestones, your laughter and your Sunday afternoons with us.
“For that, we are incredibly grateful.”
The family had previously thanked customers for their support, saying it was the people who made the decision to leave particularly difficult.
The future of the White Horse after the final day of trading has not been confirmed.
The pub’s final day will be Saturday, 16 August.
