Wokingham MP Clive Jones, has called on Sir Keir Starmer to consider whether Donald Trump can be trusted as a long-standing ally over Ukraine,
The PM gave a statement on Ukraine to the House of Commons on Monday, reporting on his trip to the United States, and his meeting with other European leaders over the weekend.
He made it clear that the UK’s relationship with the US was “indispensable”, and that they are “vital in securing the peace we all want to see in Ukraine.”
During the statement, Clive Jones spoke to the House, welcoming Keir Starmer’s support for Ukraine, whilst condemning the words of members of Trump’s administration.
He finished by asking the prime minister a critical question on Trump’s commitment to supporting the rest of Europe in securing a deal in Ukraine.
In the chamber, he said: “Mr Speaker, I commend the prime minister’s efforts in making sure that Europe continues to step-up for the defence of Ukraine.
“The United States have changed the conversation on Ukraine by appearing to put Russia first.
“His defence secretary now claims Russia is not a significant cyber-security threat to the US anymore.
“Elon Musk is publicly calling for the United States to leave NATO, and his vice president is an effective mouthpiece for Vladimir Putin in the Oval office.
“Does the Prime Minister think that ourselves and our European allies can keep President Trump on board until a fair settlement for Ukraine is achieved?”
Speaking after the debate, Clive Jones MP said: “Russia’s appalling invasion of Ukraine has caused untold damage and puts Europe and the West’s security at risk.
“With America’s support for the western alliance being openly questioned, the UK must
work with its European allies to bolster Ukraine and build our collective security.”
