WOKINGHAM Borough Council is set to approve a new leisure strategy this week. It follows a public consultation which took place last year.
The strategy include a proposal to establish an ‘Active Wokingham’ Partnership between the council’s own facilities and other organisations. Its aim is to ensure that leisure facilities and opportunities remain affordable, accessible and sustainable.
Cllr Parry Batth, executive member for environment and leisure, said that the council is committed to providing leisure facilities and outdoor spaces for residents.
“We are very aware that the quality of our leisure offer plays a significant role in enhancing wellbeing and enriching lives of our residents,”he said.
“This strategy builds on the council’s ongoing programme of new and improved leisure facilities, with investment totalling more than £50million.”
The new strategy has four key priorities. Promoting health and wellbeing to residents, raising participation and reducing levels of inactivity, and maintaining and extending accessibility to indoor leisure facilities and outdoor spaces.
More outdoor gym facilities will be created. The borough council has also pledged to work with youth and community teams, and target sessions for the borough’s black, Asian and minority ethnic communities as well as older people.
The strategy is set to be approved at an executive meeting on Thursday, January 27.
